Zach Ross: Why I Am A ShopAnthropist

Zach R., 17, Villa Park, CA

" I don't shop that much online but I do get school supplies and games and iTunes downloads. 2.5 % of any of my iTunes downloads benefit a non-profit organization so even if that is just a small amount, over the whole year it adds up and if lots of shoppers participate it can really make a difference. I chose International Campaign To Ban Landmines as my non-profit. I saw a documentary about landmines a few months ago and I was really shocked to see how they impact the population in war-torn countries. I was already against war in general before the documentary but seeing all those people, especially children, with blown off limbs and horrible injuries from landmines really motivated me to try to help somehow. War is wrong and landmines are one of the worst aspects and that's why I am a ShopAnthropist for ICBL."

NPSM Welcomes OMID E MEHR Foundation to ShopAnthropy

We are very happy to welcome OMID E MEHR FOUNDATION to nonprofitshoppingmall.com!
Omid is helping victims of violence and domestic, sexual and emotional abuse in Tehran, Iran.
The organization is incorporated in Iran, Great Britain and the USA.

Inundated with headlines about nuclear threat, war and terrorism, it is easy to forget the nearly 77 million Iranians living in the country.
Omid's documentary film "The Glass House" puts faces on a situation of abuse suffered by many women in Iran. The documentary was shown on the Sundance Channel in the USA.

Dear ShopAnthropists!

We just got an exciting email from FLYING KITES, an article from Huffington Post about their cooperation with AFRICA YOGA PROJECT. Several kids from the Flying Kites home were invited to participate in the global Yoga For Peace Flash Mob event. It is a wonderful video that will really lift you up, inspire you, give you hope. Click the link to Huffington Post to read how this friendship started. We have read so many horrible headlines the last few days in the U.S. that this bit about wonderful friendship and positive healing action made our day!

Open Your Hearts To ShopAnthropy. This Valentines Give To Those In Need.

“There is a magnet in your heart that will attract true friends. That magnet is unselfishness, thinking of others first... when you learn to live for others, they will live for you.”
- Paramahansa Yogananda

Hello beloved ShopAnthropists!
It’s that time of year again where people on all sides of the pond are bustling about hunting for that perfect Valentines Day gift. As always, we at NPSM have hundreds of fabulous options for you. But first, let’s take a moment to think about what this holiday really means. For most of us we consider this day to be one where we share an intimate time with the man or woman we love most dearly, or even just a day to enjoy a fun date with somebody new. Let us not forget though that Valentines is not just a day for those in love, or enamored with a fresh face; it is a day that is wholly based on love in itself. We all share our hearts with many people in our lives. For some it is family or friends whom we share our deepest sentiments and gratitude with, or perhaps its our pets. Regardless of who or what it may be that has your heart on a string, Valentines should be a day where we are more concerned with giving rather than receiving, because after all that is what true love is all about.

So, in the true spirit of giving, consider extending your ability to share by using our SHOP+GIVE program for all of your gifting needs. By using our EZ SHOPPER APPS for all of your online Valentines shopping you are given the opportunity to select a non-profit organization that is dear to your heart and as a result a percentage of each of your purchases will be directly donated to that particular organization. There’s no better or simpler way to give to both those who you are devoted to as well as those who desperately need your support.

As a soldier for love it is my personal goal to spread my word across the universe about the importance of using your heart to it’s fullest potential. I am a firm believer that Valentines Day is nothing more than one day where we simply spotlight an already existing devotion to the love that we spread on a daily basis. In my heart and in my home everyday is Valentines Day and I strongly believe that ALL humans should live by this same belief. Far too often we forget that there are 365 days per year for us to shower our loved ones with symbols and/or actions of our gratitude for the gift of being welcome in their lives, by being given the pleasure of sharing their ups and downs, for being allowed to be a character in their stories and for being humble enough to let us help them when they need us most. There are ENDLESS reasons for each and every one of us to be grateful for our distinct ability to love and be loved. Our hearts are so much more than just a vital organ, it is also a vital weapon….a weapon against fear, suffering, pain, uncertainty, and injustice in all its forms. If you haven’t noticed, there is a war going on across the globe. It’s a battle for all walks of life (including animals and our planet as a whole) to simply survive on a daily basis. But the fact is that the majority of us, even those who are low-income CAN do something to help others that truly have nothing.

I ask that you join our rapidly growing community of ShopAnthropists who are helping to make every day Valentines Day, by using their hearts as a weapon for change by utilizing our simple mission: Turn Everyday Shopping Into Everyday Giving….Everyday! It truly is that easy.

Happy Valentine!

Why I Am A Shop-Anthropist!

Nicole B., 26, Valley Village, CA

"Doing more for the community is one of my New Year's resolutions and becoming a Shop-Anthropist is my first action to make that resolution become a reality. I heard about Shop-Anthropy from my godmother who has been involved with the organization for several months. I think it's a great idea because I do a lot of online shopping anyway. Why not make it benefit a good cause. I chose VH1 Save The Music as my EZ Shopper APP because I am a teacher. Keeping music in schools is very important to the children's overall development.  I will tell all my girlfriends about Shop-Anthropy. They love to shop and this will make them feel really good about it."

Our January NPO: FLYING KITES GLOBAL

Happy New Year, Dear Readers!

While we love all the organizations we work with,  we spotlight a different one on www.nonprofitshoppingmall.com   each month in the hopes that you, our readers, may learn more about them and may be inspired to download their EZ Shopper APP to shop+give and help them.

Our January Spotlight is on Flying Kites Global, a young and very dynamic organization working in Kenya. Kenya has over 2 million orphaned children, 60 000 of them homeless on the streets. Their situation is as dire as that of youth in many other countries of the world and their needs can be perceived to be overwhelming.

Leila de Bruyne, Co-Founder, Executive Director and Director of Marketing for Flying Kites first came to Kenya as a tourist and she was absolutely shocked by the poverty in this country. Upon her return to the United States, she decided to return to Africa to help, first as a volunteer and a few years later by co-founding Flying Kites Global with college roommate Justine Axelsson and friend Toby Storie-Pugh in 2006. Their mission: changing the lives of children in Kenya one child at a time.
We selected Flying Kites because the organization offers a new approach that truly promises a better future for them.
While many organizations work in Africa most of the work aims at the children's survival. The immediate needs for clean water, a shelter and food have to be met to give the children a chance.
Flying Kites goes several steps further. In their own words:

Flying Kites has developed an innovative model to address the needs of orphaned children around the world. Our strategy demands that the basic requirements – access to clean water, fresh air, and ample space – are met before the more complex issues can be addressed. We adopt a holistic approach to residential care and focus our efforts on providing children with the best possible services in a unique environment. The individual elements of our three-part model allow us to have a larger impact within the communities we engage and combat poverty in a variety of ways.

What does this actually mean? Flying Kites provides exemplary care in their home to a number of extremely disadvantaged children. But many of them have the possibility of living with family members who need the organization's assistance to help them raise these children. Flying Kites also sponsors an annual conference to encourage collaboration among all the NPOs presently working in Kenya so they can become more effective and coordinated in their efforts.
In short, Flying Kites works to not just help these children survive but to help them live successful independent lives by providing health care and a good education, the essential stepping stones out of poverty and into a better future.
