Our ChangeMaker for August: Donors Choose

Dear ShopAnthropists!

We are in Back-to-School mode. As our nation's education budgets keep getting cut, we feel that we all need to do whatever we can to help our kids in school. That's why we selected Donors Choose for the month of August. is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need.
Here's how it works: public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class.
Then, you can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that inspires you. Once a project reaches its funding goal, we deliver the materials to the school.
You'll get photos of your project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. If you give over $50, you'll also receive hand-written thank-you letters from the students.
At, you can give as little as $1 and get the same level of choice, transparency, and feedback that is traditionally reserved for someone who gives millions. We call it citizen philanthropy.

As a ShopAnthropist you can double down on citizen philanthropy! Catch our great
back to school special offers, do your school supply shopping online and earmark the retailers' corporate gifting percentage for Donors Choose.

Thank you!

July's Changemaker: Flying Kites Global

Dear ShopAnthropists,

This month we are hoping to help Flying Kites Global. Flying Kites is an organization concerned with helping vulnerable children around the world. Currently, they are building The Flying Kites Leadership Academy, a home and school for abandoned, abused and orphaned children in Kenya. Located at the foot of the Aberdares Mountains, the center has become home to many children in need.

Their goal is to affect change in development practice on a global scale. To ensure sustainability as they replicate their model around the world, they have developed a series of innovative programs that fund  projects and further their mission.

Changemaker of April: Autism Speaks

Dear ShopAnthropists!

Just two days ago, the CDC released the latest autism study results. The numbers are shocking!
The autism rate in the United States skyrocketed to 1 in 88 children in 2008, a 78 percent increase over 2002, according to a new report by the CDC. In some areas of the country as many as 1 in 33 8-year old boys were diagnosed with the disorder. And still the reasons aren't clear.

Please support Autism Speaks by shopping the mall! And pledge to Light It Up Blue on April 2nd to usher in World Autism Awareness Month.

Music Majors are the Most Likely Group of College Grads to Be Admitted to Medical School

Dear ShopAnthropists!

If you are wondering why you should support our Change Maker of the Month, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, consider this!

A 2002 Canadian neurological study researched music and found music literally electrifies, at the speed of light, clusters of nerve paths in both hemispheres of our cerebral cortex that connect the neural clusters processing musical pitch, rhythm, harmony, melody, short term memory, long term memory, and emotions.
The National Association for Music Education, NAfME, formerly known as MENC, has compiled the amazing results of these studies and more.

Did you know that
Middle school and high school students who participated in instrumental music scored significantly higher than their non-band peers in standardized tests.
Students who were exposed to the music-based lessons scored a full 100 percent higher on fractions tests than those who learned in the conventional manner.
Music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school.
Also, a study of 7,500 university students revealed that music majors scored the highest reading scores among all majors including English, biology, chemistry and math.
Music study can help kids understand advanced music concepts. A grasp of proportional math and fractions is a prerequisite to math at higher levels, and children who do not master these areas cannot understand more advanced math critical to high-tech fields.
Music participants received more academic honors and awards than non-music students.

Your online purchases can put an instrument into a kid's hands and change it's future!
We have Musician's Friends, Woodwind and Brasswind and Guitar Center on globally!

Thank you for supporting education and music and our kids' future!

Dear ShopAnthropists,

It is impossible to get away from all the sad Whitney Houston headlines following her untimely passing this past Saturday.
We are saddened to see that much of the coverage dwells on her well reported personal woes. Only in passing do the media mention her amazing track record in philanthropy. Thankfully, the Huffington Post is linking a detailed list of her many charitable endeavors which Whitney continued to support despite her personal challenges. You can also find a complete list on her website:

We will always remember her amazing gifts to this world and our hearts go out to her family and friends.
